Sam Smith, who detests comparisons to Adele, could be about to follow in her footsteps by singing the theme tune to the next Bond film, Spectre.

The British singer of the worldwide hit Stay with Me has been the bookmakers’ favourite for the job for some time. Now a senior music industry source has claimed Sam Mendes, the director of Spectre and the previous Bond film Skyfall — for which Adele sang the theme — has already commissioned Smith, 23.

“Adele was certainly in the frame but it seems neither she nor Mendes really thought it was a good idea to repeat the theme tune, ” the source said. “Adele was right for them [then], but Smith is the man of this year and Mendes wanted him all along . . . he’s definitely doing it . ”

Spectre, co-starring Monica Bellucci , is set for release on November 6 and will be Daniel Craig’s fourth outing as 007. Th e source suggested Smith’s song had already been recorded, describing it as “electric ” .

However, the tune may still not make it into the film. On previous Bond films several artists have been asked to record competing tracks. KD Lang originally recorded a theme for Tomorrow Never Dies only for it to be relegated to the end credits after producers opted for a Sheryl Crow song instead.

Other names linked to the Spectre theme include Ed Sheeran. He ruled himself out last year, however, suggesting Smith would be a better choice.

Smith’s publicist would not confirm or deny his involvement . But a source said: “Wouldn’t that be exciting? ”
