Oscar Pistorius is set to receive the harshest bail conditions ever handed out in South Africa when he is released on Tuesday. He will be confined to his uncle’s house for the remainder of his fiveyear sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29, in 2013.
The strict conditions dash the 28-year-old’s hopes of working with children, a dream he has nurtured over the 11 months he has served at a top security jail in Pretoria. A member of his legal team said: “The bail conditions are set to be harsher than anyone’s ever before him.”
The decision to release the Paralympian has been widely condemned. Women’s Aid said: “Reeva’s life clearly weighs less heavily in the judicial balance than Pistorius’ access to freedom.” Womenkind Worldwide added: “Violence against women is a human rights crisis.”
